Either way, you need to make sure you are using images for social sharing which fit the social networks you are posting your content to. Nothing has a bigger initial impression on your fans and followers then how your images look in your posts. It’s what they see before they ever read a word of your text.
This is even more important if you’re a Marketer. If you are marketing your blog, you need to make sure your images look perfect when you share them on each social network you use.

Social Media Network Image Sizes Cheat Sheet:
While you can create images at the exact sizes shown below, there is some research which shows that by using a common size for both horizontal and vertical images, you can simplify your workflow and make your social media images quicker.
In experimenting with the fastest, easiest way to create images we know will work well in social media feeds, we came across a couple of image sizes that became our go-tos: one size for horizontal (landscape) images and one for vertical (portrait) images.
- Horizontal (landscape) – 1,024 x 512
- Vertical (portrait) – 800 x 1,200
Pretty Nice Huh? Just remember to test these sizes before assuming they will work well anywhere.

1. Facebook Image Sizes:
The first thing which stands out to most people when it comes to Facebook is the image sizes are rarely displayed a the same large size in which they were created. In fact, Facebook wants it this way so the image can be scaled for any size screen its visitors may use.
Don’t worry that your images are too big or wide. Facebook wants them this way so they can make your images look perfect for any user anywhere.
Facebook Image Size Guidelines:
- The ideal Facebook Cover photo size: 851 x 315 pixels (Displays on Desktop at 820 x 312)
- Profile photo size: 180 x 180 pixels
- Shared link preview size: 1200 x 627 pixels
- Shared Image Post size: 1200 x 630 pixels
- Event Image size: 1200 x 900 pixels
- For best result upload JPG file less than 100 KB
- Image with a logo or text may be best as a PNG file

2. Twitter Image Sizes:
Much like Facebook, Twitter likes to scale your images so visitors get the perfect resolution no matter what device they are using to view your account or tweets. Your profile image is scaled to work with every post you create, so make sure you create these images at the perfect size shown below or it won’t turn out looking the way you want.
Image Guidelines for Twitter profile image:
- Header photo size: 1500 x 500 pixels
- Profile photo size: 400 x 400 pixels
- Image in feed size: 1024 x 512 pixels
- Minimum Image Size in feed: 502 x 253 pixels
- JPG, GIF, or PNG file is recommended
- Can tweet up to 4 images at one time

3. LinkedIn Image Sizes:
LinkedIn is known as the largest professional network. Where other social networks may be good drivers of traffic and customers, LinkedIn is a great place for B2B as well as recruiters to connect with industry leaders.
LinkedIn’s image sizes are a little more flexible then the other social networks as you will see below.
LinkedIn Image Guidelines:
- Company cover image size: 1000 x 425 Pixels
- Profile Picture size: 400 x 400 Pixels
- LinkedIn logo size: 400 x 400 square
- Shared post image has landscape layout
- It supports JPG, GIF or PNG files only

4. Pinterest Image Sizes:
Pinterest drives more referral traffic then any other network. With this in mind, make sure all your Pinterest images are perfectly sized. Your success on Pinterest depends on the images (Pins, Profile, and Board images) you create. So make sure each is setup exactly the way we detail below.
Pinterest Image Guidelines:
- Cover image size: 217 x 146 pixels
- Pinterest Profile size: 165 x 165 Pixels
- Pin size: 735 x 1102 pixels (optimal)
- Board Cover image size: 222 x 150 pixels
- Supports JPG and PNG for profile pictures

5. Instagram Image Sizes:
Mainly Instagram focuses on images, but remember image size matters a lot. It’s very simple. However, Instagram profiles don’t have particular cover photos. Your cover photo is created by a variety of images you share on your Instagram profile.
Image Guidelines:
- Profile photo: 110 x 110pixels
- Photo thumbnail: 161 x 161 pixels
- Photo size: 1080 x 1080 pixels
- Appear on home page at 110 x 110 pixels

6. Google+ Image Sizes:
Google+ is tied to Google search, so the more you optimize your images, the better. Google will resize your images itself and do a pretty good job of it, so test the look. You might get more flexibility here then with the others listed above.
Google Plus Image Guidelines:
- Cover photo size: 1080 x 608 pixels
- Profile photo size: 250 x 250 Pixels
- Shared image size: 497 x 373 Pixels
- Choose image with JPG, GIF or PNG file

7. Tumblr Image Sizes:
Tumblr is a customizable social network that allows users easily share anything they want. Although the profile photo of Tumblr doesn’t appear frequently throughout the site, you need to make sure that you choose an image that suits your page layout.
While Tumblr says the Image Post size is 500 x 750 pixels, they will accepts almost any image size and make them look good. This should be tested though, so don’t assume anything. Always test first.
Image Guidelines:
- Profile image: 128×128 pixels
- Image post 500×750 pixels
- JPG, GIF, PNG or BMP image is recommended
- Image can’t exceed 10MB
- Animated GIFs must be under 1 MB and max at 500 pixels

Remember that the image dimensions list above are always changing. The social media sites listed above always seem to be tweaking something so expect things to change.
